Curriculum vitae:

A. Batliner obtained his M.A. in Scandinavian languages in 1973, and his Dr. phil. in Phonetics at the University of Munich in 1978. From 1978 to 1984, he was assistant professor at the Institut für Nordische Philologie; since 1984, he has been member of a research group on intonation/prosody. His fields of research up to 1984 were Scandinavian literature, translation, language and gender, and phonology. Since 1984, he has worked in several research projects on prosody that were financed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the BMFT (German federal ministry for research). He has specialized in the following aspects of prosody:

• the interface between phonetics and syntax/semantics
• the linguistic function of prosody, esp. the marking of sentence mood and sentence accent
• the classification of linguistic units using prosodic features
• the perception of intonation contours
• the perception and psychophysics of fundamental frequency
• prosody and automatic speech recognition and understanding
• prosody in spontaneous speech
• speech and emotion
