Quechua

Back to the Language Demos

Quechua is an American Indian language widely spoken in Peru and Bolivia.

Main points of interest:

-Ejectives together with contrast between (pulmonary) voiceless unaspirated and voiceless aspirated
-Contrasting velar and uvular place of articulation.

See also K'ekchi (for example UCLA demo) for velars vs. uvular, and the Amharic demo for ejectives from a completely different language family. See Ladefoged & Maddieson (2008, pp. 35-36) for discussion.
