This workshop is held in the context of the unibz-LMU project “New Perspectives on Diphthong Dynamics” which focuses on the vowel inventories of Sardinian and Tyrolean. The goal of our project is to provide a comprehensive description of the rich vowel inventories of these languages, particularly the numerous diphthongs. We further seek to contribute to our theoretical understanding of diphthongs in their relation to both monophthongs and vowel sequences (hiatus), which is crucial to deepening our knowledge of vowel types, synchronic vowel systems, the paths vowel systems take diachronically, as well as theories of speech production which rarely deal with the full range of different vowel types attested in languages. The goal for this workshop is to explore the spatial and temporal dynamics of vowel systems from various perspectives, including typology, phonetics and phonology, as well as dialectology.
Venue: Philologicum of the LMU, Ludwigstraße 25 (entrance is on Schellingstr.).
