NEW PERSPECTIVES ON DIPHTHONG DYNAMICS (DID)

IPS (LMU) and ALPS (unibz) joint project, 2023-2026

The proposal aims to study the inner temporal dynamics of diphthongs across different languages and diphthong types using Tyrolean and Sardinian as the focus languages. The research will involve a comprehensive phonetic description of the vowel inventories of these languages, acoustic recordings of 40 speakers per language, and analysis of time series data to study the inner temporal structure of the diphthongs under varying prosodic conditions. The study will explore whether diphthongs can be understood as a sequence of two vocalic gestures or whether the target of diphthong production is a dynamic transitional movement through the vowel space. The research team plans to make their recordings and speech technological tools available to the scientific community to facilitate future research on these languages. Overall, this study has the potential to expand our knowledge of diphthong dynamics across languages and deepen our understanding of vowel systems and theories of speech production.

Tag der Mehrsprachigkeit

October, 23rd 2024

VinKiamo is a citizen science project which involves high schools to promote awareness about multilingualism, collect linguistic data through crowdsourcing, and analyze dialect data as a starting point for understanding language regularities. For the winter semester 2024, VinKiamo Südtirol planned the "Tag der Historischen Mehrsprachigkeit" aimed at upper secondary schools in Südtirol and the DID project team joined the outreach event held at the unibz Faculty of Education, Campus Brixen. At the stand, the students were able to familiarize themselves with the notion of a diphthong and see how it visually represented in a spectrogram. They were challenged to brainstorm words containing a diphthongal sound in their local variety and express the rich linguistic diversity in speech and spelling in South Tyrol.

P&P 2024

October, 2nd 2024

The 20. Jahrestreffen für Phonetik und Phonologie im deutschsprachigen Raum took place from October 1 to 2 at the Martin-Luther-University in Halle. The goal of this conference is to showcase current phonetic and phonological research happening across the German-speaking world and foster intellectual discussion and networking. Aleese Block presented a poster titled “The Vowel Inventory of Tyrolean in Meran” which featured an acoustic description of the vowel inventory collected during our fieldwork in December 2023. A PDF of the poster can be found here.

Phonetics Meets Dialectology

June, 6th 2024

The "Phonetics Meets Dialectology" workshop took place on June 6th, 2024 at the University of Bozen. Its primary goal was to bring together experts in dialectology and phonetics, focusing particularly on Tyrolean and Sardinian and exchange early findings from our ongoing fieldwork. Alessandro Vietti (unibz) and Aleese Block (LMU) introduced the Sardinian and Tyrolean databases respectively. Block’s talk focused on establishing a modern working inventory for Tyrolean while Vietti’s talk explored approaches to describing diphthong dynamics found in the Sardinian data. We were then honored to host Ioana Chitoran and Johanna Cronnenberg (UParis7), who provided valuable insights into Romanian historical diphthongs and presented preliminary results of an acoustic study of /iV/ sequences, considering duration and formant dynamics. Daniela Mereu (Unito) delivered a comprehensive exploration of Sardinian phonology, tracing its historical evolution and patterns of variation. Birgit Alber (unibz) discussed Tyrolean syllabic structures through a typological lens, while Alexander Glück (unibz) explored the diachronic paths which lead to the vowel inventory in South Tyrolean German dialects. The diverse range of presentations provided fresh insight to our work and helped highlight important methodological and theoretical considerations as the project moves forward. See all abstracts.

AISV 2024

February, 2nd 2024

From February 1 to 3, 2024, the University of Turin hosted the 20th edition of the AISV national conference organized by the Laboratory of Experimental Phonetics, "Arturo Genre." The conference's central theme was the interplay between "voice, media, and new technologies". Our research team participated in the conference by delivering a presentation about the theory and methodologies employed in the DID Project. The abstract of our contribution is available on page 11 of the conference booklet, titled Minority languages documentation as a flywheel to explore diphthong dynamics: the DID project

Meran Data collection

30. Januar 2024

Campidanese Sardinian Data Collection

11 luglio 2023

15. Februar 2023
