The Sixth Workshop on Sound Change (WSC6) will take place over three days, with invited talks from international experts, poster sessions and generously scheduled general discussions. By bringing participants together in a residential setting, the workshop is planned to maximize sustained, high-quality scientific exchange beyond the formal sessions, offering a unique opportunity for rigorous debate and in-depth discussion in a collegial and inclusive environment.

WSC6 is organized by Jonathan Harrington and Mary Stevens (IPS Munich) and is a continuation of the highly successful sound change workshops in Barcelona (2010), Munich (2012), Berkeley (2014) Edinburgh (2017) and Davis (2019). For this sixth workshop oral presentations are organized around the following specific themes:

  • Speech processing, the lexicon and sound change
  • Coarticulation, speech dynamics and sound change
  • Lexical tone and sound change
  • Sociophonetic variation and sound change
  • Sound change in individuals and communities
  • Tracking sound change over real time

The workshop consists of invited talks, discussion sessions and poster sessions. Abstracts describing empirical research on sound change are welcomed for poster presentation at the workshop. Invited speakers include:

  • Molly Babel (University of British Columbia)
  • Patrice Beddor (University of Michigan)
  • Marc Brunelle (University of Ottawa)
  • Joan Bybee (University of New Mexico)
  • Robin Dodsworth (North Carolina State University)
  • Suzanne Evans Wagner (Michigan State University)
