Longitudinal analysis in primary-school children - Bavaria and Albania

Motivation
The aim of this part of the project is to understand how the phonetic space changes in relation to anatomical growth changes in children. We further seek to better understand how deep dialect and the standard emerge and are cognitively represented in children.

Target group
Children entering primary school and speaking the local accent

Recruitment from two types of schools:

  • One in a relatively isolated community in which the children have a homogeneous local accent
  • One in a school that is geographically close but with a high migrant intake and hence heterogeneous accents

Procedure

  • Repeated recordings of children of the first year once per annum over four years
  • One-time recordings of children of the fourth year
  • Acoustic recordings as well as ultrasound recordings of the tongue

Languages

  • Bavarian-German
  • Albanian
